Business Overview

We are an Art Association that serves the Keizer community with a focus on art education for children and adults as well as a promoter of local artists through monthly art shows. Keizer Art Association has been in existence since 1977. The three founding members were Don Walton, Marge Bowder and Enid Joy Mount. The Associaton operated out of many locations in Keizer before finding a permanent home here at the Keizer Heritage Building. Enid Joy Mount was very determined that children have a chance to experience and create art. She helped them find clay in the natural environment (located under horsetail plants) and then make objects they could wood-fire with her help. Thanks to the generosity of the community and Enid Joy Mount's family, our Gallery continues to have monthly shows featuring local artists and others from Oregon and beyond. Pat is an artist with 30 years experience in oil painting, acrylics, and polymer clay sculpting. Over the years she has attended community college art classes, private art classes and workshops with Susan Schewee and Jack Johnston, doll artist. She grew up in the midwest, and has lived in Oregon for 57 years. Her work history includes working as a secretary, bank teller, loan closer, escrow closer. She has taught art at KAA and Greenbalm's Quilted Forest. She was previously on the Board of Directors at Illahe Country Club and was a volunteer for the Oregon Golf Ass'n for 25 years rating golf courses. Carol Harris has been Education Council Chair at KAA for the last six years and is responsible for developing the extensive and successful art class program at KAA. Carol was born in Baker City, went to OSU and received a Bachelor's Degree in Education and Art, a Master's Degree in Education at WOU and settled in Salem to teach elementary school for 31 years. She lives in the country west of Salem where she and her husband were cherry farmers and now grow hay for horses. Interests are art, 4-H, and traveling. she is an exquisite color pencil artist, winning first place in the Polk County Fair and gallery shows. She has been a KAA board member for six years, serving as Secretary and Education Chair. Penny White is an award-winning calligrapher who also enjoys paste paper, marbling and bookmaking. She is a popular KAA calligrapher teacher. She grew up in London and started out as a secretary for Sir Winston's son, Randolph Churchill, later for provincial solicitors in the UK, and then NATO in Brussels. After moving to Oregon, she took up calligraphy and continues taking classes and participating at the International Calligraphy Conference. She has been active in the Capital Calligraphers for over 25 years, currently serving as Co-President. She regularly volunteers at Art Fairs and the State Fair calligraphying visitors' names. She has won several blue ribbons in the State Fair Art Annual. She has participated in shows at the Capitol, Elsinore Gallery, Salem Library, and Keizer. She is also a member of Family and Community Education, serving as secretary. My name is Cheryl Mohr Manhire. I first came to the Keizer Art Association when I began taking colored pencil classes four years ago. During this challenging and fun experience, I have enjoyed making many new friends. I became a board member in January of this year and I look forward to my work as membership chair.I retired in 2004 after spending many years working as a counselor/administrator in the addiction treatment field. I live with my husband, Dick, in a condo in south Salem. Dick and I have two grown children and four grandsons. My live is rich. I am a retired teacher living in Salem, Oregon. I've been involved in photography since I was 8 years old in one form or another. While I tend to gravitate toward nature photography, I find that anything that catches my attention easily becomes a subject. I've been a volunteer photographer and coach for the West Salem High School swim team since it opened. I also do volunteer photography work for the Salem Keizer Education Foundation. I find that I've become a �documenter' in that my photo sets become a sort of timeline of what I've seen during that session or trip. I usually don't set out to capture a particular subject or image. I like to sample what passes by my view, as a fish waiting in a quiet stretch of a river might snack on the bugs floating by. I am married and have two children. My name is Sue Traeger. I am a new board member of KAA. I am a retired elementary school teacher. I have always liked working with my hands. My mother and grandmother taught me to sew, knit and do craft projects early in my life. Currently, I am very interested in art and I take the colored pencil classes at KAA. I appreciate Keizer Art Association for providing classes for hobby artists. I am also very impressed by the monthly art shows put on by the board. My husband and I live in Silverton where most of our children and 7 out of 10 grandchildren live. Our daughter and her family live in Alaska. We have two yellow labs who rule our house! My other hobbies are traveling, decorating, and collecting and selling vintage items. I am happy to help KAA move forward with their many plans to promote art. My name is Julie Thoreson. I came to Keizer Art Association about four years ago when I heard about the colored pencil class. I was not familiar with colored pencil art but I soon found that it is a fun, relaxing, interesting medium. My background held several years of interior decorating, which can be said to be an art form in itself, so colored pencil seemed to be a good step forward and became a good fit. As a new board member I look forward to a fun and rewarding experience. My husband, Dave, and I are long time Salem residents, and currently live in South Salem. Jill was born and raised on a Native American reservation. She is an enrolled member of the Onondaga tribe, Iroquois Nation. She attended Syracuse University (SU) (NY), St. Cloud University (MN), OSU, WOU, and several community colleges. She obtained a two-year professional Master's degree from OSU/WOU.Jill has won several awards for her photography, ceramics, art glass, and bronze sculptures. She also works in blacksmithing and does ornamental welding. One of her welded iron pieces is displayed at the Oregon Gardens. Most of Jill's art pieces are commissioned since the pieces are unique for the setting.As a current KAA board member, Jill has chosen to function as the academic facilities liaison for KAA. Read more
