Business Overview

While attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Merlene Schain had the opportunity to forge her artistic identity a mere flight of stairs away from one of the world's leading art museums. The stimulation of that setting had a profound impact on her work. With an eye on facilitating that inspiring, site-specific experience for others, she imagined a small working studio where young students could create artwork in proximity to influential and professional artists. Hence, Schain Studios was born September 1989. It started out as a small business in Wyoming, Ohio. In the front of the space Merlene sold her own artwork, pottery, and hand-made jewelry; and in the back she maintained a modest classroom where she taught painting and drawing to a handful of adults and youth. The business quickly outgrew the small space so Merlene purchased a building in Glendale, Ohio. In this new location, she was able to expand both the gallery and classroom space. In 2009, Schain Studios entered two students in the Scholastic Art awards and both students won Gold Keys. It was at that moment, Merlene realized Schain Studios needed to dedicate its sole purpose to education. In 2011 she closed the gallery and expanded the studio, tripling the classroom space as well as creating several small private studios. Since that time Merlene is responsible for mentoring students in achieving over 300 regional and national Scholastic awards, and over $700,000 in college scholarship money from some of the top art schools in the country. The studios are equipped with easels, large drawing tables, an art library, as well as an extensive selection of high quality art making supplies. On site there is Merlene Schain's personal studio where students have opportunities to visit to observe Merlene's process and additional ways of making art. Students learn from the instructor, personal involvement, and each other. They are encouraged to stretch, experiment and enjoy art making. Schain Studios offers an intensive fine art program with an emphasis on drawing, painting, design, and conceptual thinking. Students are encouraged to combine a variety of materials as their skill level develops. They are asked to push themselves outside of their artistic comfort zone and experiment with different ways of making art and exploring materials. Each student is taught individually in small classroom settings so each individual can strive to their personal level of expertise. Throughout our four studio spaces students are working on different projects in a variety of media. The school is a high-energy environment that emphasizes critical thought and quality over replication and quantity. At Schain Studios students are taught to think like artists, not just make art.
